Round 3: Name That Photo

April 26th, 2008

You guys are so good at this, we’re gonna do it again. Sarah at Omnibus has sent me a bunch of photos that don’t have a date. These might be included in U2: A Diary, but we really need to know when (and where, if possible) the pictures were taken.

Some of these are quite obvious in general — “Oh, that’s the Joshua Tree Tour” — but we need to be as specific as possible so photos can be placed at the right spot in the diary/timeline.

If you can help us narrow down the dates on any of these photos, please reply in the comments of this post. And be sure to include the FILENAME so I know which photo you’re talking about.

Sound good?

Here they are: http://www.u2diary.com/pix1/

Thanks in advance!

A similar photo, apparently from same photo session, is captioned “First American tour, Chicago 1982″ in an old Rolling Stone magazine. Based on tour dates, I’d guess it’s most likely from Chicago April 1981, the weather is too nice in the photo to be from Chicago shows in December 1981 or February 1982.

A nearly identical photo appears on the cover of Melody Maker dated Nov 10, 1984. The article references following the band from Nantes to Paris, so probably one of the live shows from this timeframe in October 1984.

Matt – on this photo: http://www.u2diary.com/pix1/rex_97236k.jpg the date is 1982…it’s clearly marked on the bottom of the photo :)

By the way – all the REX photos have the year around the photo – http://www.u2diary.com/pix1/rex_102557d.jpg looks like it says 1983, and http://www.u2diary.com/pix1/rex_112049b.jpg says 1984.

Thx guys. We’re well aware that the year is on a couple of the photos. And I can come up with a year for most of the others. But we need DATES. :-)

That looks like an American locker room/changing room, so if the year is correct (1984) it has to be December.

i can’t swear, but adam and bono are wearing the exact same clothes and it was a daylight show – the rigging in the background also looks the same.

i have this bootleg on dvd and it is one of my favorites! – i’ll send you a copy if you’d like!

http://www.u2diary.com/pix1/21165904.jpg is from the first show of the Joshua Tree tour. The footage appears in the ‘Outside It’s America’ documentary, when the concert is paused so a Time photographer can shoot the band in front of their audience.

Awesome Pam – thank you! We’re looking for a good 1987 photo and that one may do the trick. Actually, the thing with the TIME photographer happened at the 2nd show, April 4 — but that’s plenty close enough. :-)

Thanks again! And thx to all who have helped here…
